Poem

The Senator snorts at the City Councilwoman’s
ignorance of how things really get done.
She shakes her head
at the impracticality of the Professor who
pities the working conditions
of the Non-Profit Executive Director who despises
- in his weaker moments
the fanaticism of all of us
who do it for free after work
- or during work.

When the call to march finally takes hold
and we go from shouting slogans on our laptops
to finally meeting face to face

we’ll have lots of support
from those who know so much about these things
that they’ve made it a career
and that will be helpful.
Still it’s worth remembering that
ignorant, impractical,
pitiable, fanatical
though we may be,
we are learning.
